Sent by her mother to the edge of the Niger to gather rushes for the Ceremony of Beginnings, Nsia encounters many distractions, until the ancestors' spirits guide her on her way to becoming a wise little woman. Nsia's mother knows that childhood is a time that passes all too quickly. Instead of spending her days playing and running, Nsia must now begin to help her mother, who is preparing for the New Year celebration. Nsia is sent to gather the rushes used to weave the baskets for the Ceremony of Beginnings. In this magical story of rhythmic prose and vibrant images, a girl dreams that she flies over mountains, spirits float in the woods and streams, voices whisper, and ancestors guide Nsia toward her own maturity. Flyaway Girl grows up--aware, sensitive, changing, and on her way to becoming the Wise Little Woman of her destiny.
